How to care of your pearls

The contact of a Tahitian pearl on the skin provides an incredible feeling of pleasure, because like all the noblest materials, the tahitian pearl is a living material. It is also the only gem on earth from a living organism, which makes it truly exceptional. That's why it requires some special care.

All natural pearls need attention like freshwater pearl necklaces, Akoya pearls, Tahitian and Australian pearls.

For example, we advise you to regularly soak your pearl jewelry in a container of water to maintain their natural glow. The fact that it contains water and protein requires it to remain in the open air. Tahitian pearls are also very fragile and prone to scratches.

Therefore, please avoid rubbing with hard objects or surfaces so as not to damage your pearl. You will also be careful to avoid contact with strippers or acids (perfume, hairs spat...) because it contains calcium carbonate crystals, sensitive to acids.

How do you store your cultured pearls?

All jewelry composed of cultured pearls such as necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rings or pendants requires to be stored in the shelter of other jewels either in their original case or in a soft fabric.

Can pearls be scratched?

Pearl mother-of-pearl is a rather fragile material that could scratch over time, mainly due to repeated contact with other jewelry, so they must take precautions to avoid the chances of scratching your cultured pearls.

How do you clean your pearl?

In order to preserve your pearl, which is a fragile material that does not support chemicals or heat, a few precautions are necessary to clean your jewel. However, this is a very simple operation. To prevent the appearance of small impurities and traces of perspiration, we advise you, after removing your pearls, at the end of the day, to rinse them with clear water, then to dry them gently with a soft cloth. You can also add a drop of olive oil to your cloth to make your pearl glow and maintain its shine.

How do I protect the pearls?

Never use jewelry cleaners, if they are not specific to pearls, as they may contain ammonia. Never use ultrasound, steam cleaners, detergents, bleaches, baking soda or ammonia. Do not use toothbrushes or abrasive pads as they can scratch the surface of the bead. Do not use oils or even Monoi. Do not store your pearls in a dry, warm place or wrap them in cotton or wool. It is not recommended to sleep with your pearls or wear them in the shower or in the bath.

Some more tips:

Avoid direct contact of your fingers on the bead, as they convey perspiration that could damage the gem. For example, to remove your ring, you will make sure to touch only the metal part of the ring, this will also prevent the bead from serving its mount.

When a pearl is particularly dirty or poorly maintained, it can be soaked in a solution of water and mild soap, but be careful not to use aggressive detergent.
